The paper focuses on the relationship between the individual and society, as well as on the nature of the “vinculum” between the self (myself) and the others, starting from J. Locke’s thought. If, on the one hand, consciousness seems to have an aspect of inaccessibility, on the other hand, Locke is the spokesperson for a necessary overcoming of the original condition of solipsism, toward a participatory and social dimension of knowledge. In this context, the language as a mean of communication, to which Locke devotes the entire Third Book of the “Essay concerning Human Understanding”, plays a fundamental role in establishing bonds between individuals and allowing an exit from solipsism. Locke’s theses on language allow to speak of a Lockean ethics of communicative relation, which pays particular attention to otherness, even before the contemporary ethics of communication of both K.-O. Apel and J. Habermas.
